I’m currently reading a 9th-Century classic of Saxon literature: The Heliand. In fact, I’ve started writing a reflection paper on it for class. This is a fascinating recasting of the gospel story set in tribal Europe. I recommend it for anyone interested in that time-period or interested in how the life and death of Jesus can be reworked into another context. This particular translation does not rhyme, as does the original manuscript, but it stays true to the author’s intent. Thought I’d share.
